A family-run firm, Universal Bags was started in two small rooms in 1989 in Bulawayo with only two sewing machines. The founders saw an opportunity in the market for low cost durable luggage and seized the opportunity.
Unibag, now based in Thorngrove, has grown to employ 140 people and is able to turn out 500 to 2000 units a day depending on styles. Now the biggest luggage manufacturer in Zimbabwe, the firm is kept busy by local and regional demand, exporting to Botswana, Zambia and Malawi.
